In this edition, we’re sharing some of what we learned in Boston. And note the new time for our upcoming webinar, “Meet Fernando,” where we’ll talk more about Boston and beyond!

A Deep Desire

Eve had a chance to present Building Catholic Futures’ perspective and materials to many different audiences during her week in Boston. She spoke with priests, educators, parents whose children have come out, diocesan officials, and local LGBT/SSA+ Catholics. Here’s a taste of what we learned:

• BCF’s “Four Secular Lenses” give needed names to the perspectives of Catholic educators — and help them see the strengths in others' viewpoints.
• Catholic parents have deep insights into what they and their children need from the Church.
• Priests and ministry leaders are eager to get beyond the fear of saying the wrong thing.
• Real people’s stories resonate and illuminate the Faith.
• Gay Catholics’ fellowship helps them share their experiences for the good of the broader Church.
• In a time of polarization, Catholics want to act as members of One Body.

BCF has said from the beginning that there are people of goodwill everywhere in the Church, at every level and in every role. In Boston we saw living proof: We can understand one another, learn from one another, and encourage one another in following Jesus.

We are so grateful to those who helped with these events, and especially to the people and institutions who hosted Eve! Special thanks to David Palmieri and the Without Exception Network for their event for educators; the Secretariat for Evangelization and Discipleship, who brought Eve to speak with parents; and Fr. Michael Della Penna, our host at St. Leonard’s in the North End.
